Complexity Spectacles

Complex phenomena have many faces and manifest in most corners of our lives. Complex spectacles invites you to interactively meet the many faces of complexity throughout a five-day immersive experience. You will be challenged to investigate theoretical aspects of complexity in relation to your own situations and interests. Our approach asks for profound commitment and engagement of you as a participant. Throughout this collective endeavour you will learn to look through complexity spectacles. Looking through such a lens can enrich the way you envisage the complexity of human organising, broaden how you see yourself in relation to the world around you and deepen your capacity to navigate complex dilemmas.

& You!

The second part of this five-day session revolves around you as a person, aiming to give you new perspectives on your key personal questions. You will explore how you want to relate to the complexity of life: how to deal with wicked personal problems and how to be a meaningful individual in a complex world.

Program and approach

  • Part 1 - Monday and Tuesday - Spectacles
Part one deals with the nature of complexity itself. You can expect a dynamic learning experience, where information delivery blends with interactive experiences, reflective moments and discussions around different themes. Profound commitment is asked of participants, however, a modular approach will allow you to check in and out according to your own needs. We will further explore where we encounter complex phenomena in our own lives, making the whole a dynamic and associative interweaving of theoretical concepts as related to real life.
  • Wednesday - Passage to part 2
Between the two parts of the course, there will be a one-day experimental open space to harvest and share insights, experiences and ideas. New participants may also join us on this day for the second part of the course. This day will also serve as a space where you can explore, develop and refine the core personal questions you want to take forward into part 2.
  • Part 2 - Thursday and Friday - You!
What does it mean to act wisely in a complex world? This section of the course will be about who you want to be in the world. What impact can you have as an agent in a complex system? Can you influence the emergent patterns that are constantly evolving around you? What can you mean to others in a complex world? We will explore such question via a journey together. You will be led on both a metaphorical and literal journey through the beautiful city of Nijmegen and surrounds, exploring what your insights from looking through the complexity spectacles could mean for your future.
